Evaluation and Active Control of Clustered Hall Thruster Discharge Oscillations

چکیده
While preliminary experiments with a cluster of four Busek 200-Watt (BHT-200-X3) Closed Drift Hall thrusters indicate reasonable performance scalability from single thruster experiments, cluster plume interactions are believed to give rise to an increased ion energy spectrum as well as cross-talk and synchronization between the thruster discharges. Recent experiments with a higher power cluster of four 600-Watt (BHT-600) Hall thrusters have exhibited similar clustering behavior. Discharge voltage and current characteristics are studied in detail with frequency magnitude and phase analysis from low frequencies up to 100 kHz. Modulation of the electromagnetic circuit current provides data for the analysis of multiple correlations between the various signals, thereby quantifying all interdependencies. Accentuation and shifting of various modal features (including the so called “breathing” mode) are observed in the clustered configuration. We are then motivated to provide active stabilization of the observed oscillations in an effort to improve thruster lifetimes, overall efficiency, and performance. After identification of the thruster cluster system, various models and control algorithms are developed to provide stabilizing feedback control to the clustered Hall thrusters. Application of this control in real time has shown reductions in the discharge oscillations during thruster startup and steady operation.

Temporally and Spatially Resolved Measurements in the Plume of Clustered Hall Thrusters
A High-speed Dual Langmuir Probe system (HDLP) and a high-speed camera tracked 19.6-kHz waves of ionized propellant emitted by the unsteady ionization process or “breathing mode” of a cluster of Hall thrusters. Two 600-W, low-power Hall thrusters were operated together in close proximity with 200-V, 2-A xenon discharges, producing the plume examined in this study. Large amplitude plasma oscilla...
متن کاملInvestigations of an Environmentally Induced Long Duration Hall Thruster Start Transient
A long duration Hall thruster start transient is produced by exposure of the thruster to ambient laboratory atmosphere. This behavior was first observed during operation of a cluster of four 200 W BHT-200 Hall effect thrusters where large anode discharge fluctuations, visible as increased anode current and a diffuse plume structure, occurred in an apparently random manner. During operation of a...

Hall Effect Thrusters (HET) are known to exhibit many high-speed oscillations that are indicative of thruster performance. Azimuthal ionization oscillations, called spokes, have been investigated extensively but the mechanisms governing their behavior are still poorly understood. Most experimentation has been done with single-channel Hall thrusters but evidence exists that a nested-channel Hall...

The primary life-limiting mechanism of Hall thrusters is the sputter erosion of the discharge channel walls by high-energy propellant ions. Because of the difficulty involved in characterizing this erosion experimentally, many past efforts have focused on numerical modeling to predict erosion rates and thruster lifespan, but those analyses were limited to Hall thrusters operating in the 200–400...
متن کاملTHE EFFECT OF SEGMENTED ANODES ON THE PERFORMANCE AND PLUME OF A HALL THRUSTER By:
Development of alternative propellants for Hall thruster operation is an active area of research. Xenon is the current propellant of choice for Hall thrusters, but can be costly in large thrusters and for extended test periods. Condensible propellants may offer an alternative to xenon, as they will not require costly active pumping to remove from a test facility, and may be less expensive to pu...
